Wimmel Research Fellowships: Call for Submissions
THEME
»Immortality & Self-aware Systems«
Who will we believe in – gods, superheroes, cyborgs? What will we doubt – intelligence, reality, perfection? Will we live forever, in a society of »total recall,« without forgetting? As future producers of memory, how do we experience the present moment? Will our minds achieve immortality if they are stored in a cloud? What role will we humans assume in the age of self-aware and self-developing machines? What are the consequences, if ethical and moral standards are no longer defined by us humans, but shaped by self-aware systems? When machines acquire a set of skills so far reserved to humans, what will constitute the difference between humans and machines? How can we prepare for the age of self-aware systems? Whom and which purpose will these machines and systems serve? And with which hopes and desires do we humans address them?
The »WimmelResearch-Fellowship« will be awarded as part of a joint project between Robert Bosch GmbH, Akademie Schloss Solitude, and Wimmelforschung. The collaboration is based on the development of Platform 12, an experimental space designed by the artistic duo Wimmelforschung in collaboration with Bosch as part of Bosch’s center for research and advance engineering in Renningen. As an essential feature, Platform 12 contains a permanent collaboration with Akademie Schloss Solitude, in the framework of which artists of various disciplines engage with the company as indirect observers and initiators, to exchange ideas with researchers and work on their own and joint artistic projects. The fellowship is meant to encourage artists and researchers to explore new ideas and to shape future-oriented concepts together. The main focus is not necessarily the production of a specific artistic work, but the encounter and process of dialog in itself.
Artists from all disciplines (including architects, designers, authors, sound artists, performers, filmmakers, coders) are invited to apply.
The deadline to apply is 20 January.
