Mentorship in quality dance criticism

A mentorship in quality dance criticism

We are now looking for up to 10 people with a lot of enthusiasm and some prior experience in writing about dance. The participants will be mentored by our team of leading critics including Donald Hutera (The Times), Sanjoy Roy (The Guardian), Kelly Apter (The Scotsman) and Laura Cappelle (New York Times).

Under their guidance, participants have the chance to create, shape and share conversations about dance and hone their critical writing skills. Springback Academy is a fast-track way to gain experience and technique in responsible, effective, attractive dance criticism as well as to explore and understand the opportunities that digital publishing has to offer.

In March 2018, Springback Magazine was launched. The publication’s contributors are drawn exclusively from writers who have participated in the Springback Academy programme and form part of the ever-growing community of ‘graduate’ writers.

To see Springback writing from previous years, visit Springback Academy online. A free quickstart guide to writing dance reviews can be downloaded as a PDF.

Apply before 24:00 (GMT) Monday 9 January 2023

Open call – Film O’Clock International Festival 2023

The third edition of the Film O’Clock International Festival takes place between February 28 and March 4, 2023, simultaneously in seven countries united by the 25th meridian east, in the same time zone: Romania, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Greece, Egypt, and South Africa through the distribution of the festival’s agenda in seven partner cinemas / physical partner venues. Even if Film O’Clock was born as a hybrid event, the strategy of the 2023 edition is to focus on physical spaces, and to return to cinemas. We understand that the entire planet has missed the interaction in the cinema. We all missed the physical meeting that helps establish better the connection between filmmakers and viewers and eventually between each other. We understand the value of live communication in person, which is difficult to convey in text format or using emoticons. The moment has come to meet in person. As we already set from the very beginning, the festival’s programme contains only films produced in these countries, the focus being on films whose authors share a strong artistic vision, and different forms of cinematic storytelling. The concepts that form the base for Film O’Clock International Festival have two main drives: film as a narrative device for steering emotions and ideas, and quality time – spent together, the most valuable resource. Although positioned on the same meridian we are rarely aware of the fact that we share the same time with people that are far away both geographically and culturally – and that exactly this time, the founding idea of the festival, can bring us closer. The Festival is an annual event, competitive and non-specialized, and the third edition of the festival is organized and produced by Creatrix Fama and ABI Foundation. The Festival programme contains a short film competition and a series of non-competitive special projections of classics for the feature length films. We respect the cinema heritage of each country and we wish to bring into the spotlight classic films because we really believe that they have shaped and enriched the cinema culture. The main prize will be awarded by the public through its vote. A special prize will be rewarded by the Festival’s organizers for a short film that brings an innovative vision that promotes cinematic excellence. Additional scheduling will contain Q&A sessions with the representatives of the films selected in the Festival, and two industry events, which will be held online.

General Rules:

1. The short films can be individually subscribed into the competition filling the application form from the Festival’s website: www.FoC-IFF.com until January 16th, 2023. The selection collective will choose up to 18 short films for the International Short Film Competition. The selected films must be mainly produced from at least one of the following countries: Romania, South Africa, Egypt, Greece, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Lithuania.

2. Production of the selected short films must have finished after January 1, 2021.

3. Each film will be followed by a Q&A session with the creative team and other special guests, streamed online and simultaneously through the Festival’s communication channels. The attendance at the Q&A session of at least one member of the crew team is required.

4. The preselection notice shall be communicated to the distributor/ film producer by the end of January 2023.

5. Disclosure of a film’s preselection and final selection to third parties is not allowed before the publication of the official selection on the Festival’s website: www.FoCIFF.com.

6. A film confirmed in the public schedule of the Festival – competition and special projections – can’t be withdrawn.

7. The projection’s schedule and the order of the films in the projection is established by the Festival.

8. The Festival has the right to project the short films selected for the competition twice during the Festival in the seven venues in the participating countries. The winning short films will be projected one more time after the Closing Ceremony.

9. The schedule established by the selection collective will be officially announced by mid-February 2023, the latest.

10. The films’ screenings will be in physical venues, in one venue in each of the seven participating countries (Lithuania, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Egypt and South Africa), according to the technical specifications established by the Festival. The screening copy must be delivered by the film director/ producer along with the subtitle files/dialogue list in English and in the film’s original language.

11. The screening copy must be sent online according to the technical specs sent by the Festival, and no later than the deadline established by the Festival, in order to assure the best organizing conditions.

12. The Festival reserves the right to use stills and video excerpts for the promotion of the film and the Festival (max 3 minutes).

13. The audience will choose through on gross value of 7 00site vote: THE BEST SHORT FILM prize with a Euro. The prize will be awarded to the producer le gal person. The Jury individual or 500 prize offered by the organizers, with a gross value of Euro, will be awarded to the director. There are no financial compensations except the prizes listed above.

14. The participation confirmation means the acceptance of the cu rrent regulations, including the confirmation that the distributor/ producer owns the distribution rights for all territories participating in the Festival and that the image rights of the persons in the film have been cleared.

15. The Festival reserves the right to change these Regulations at any time and without notification.

Shakesphere 2023 Call for projects

This is a call for Shakespeare related performance work, from the world theatre community.

After an enormously successful first season in 2022, when 42 project proposals were received from around the world, we are delighted to announce the call for the 2023 Shakesphere programme.

The ESFN (European Shakespeare Festivals Network) brings together the key festivals across Europe who present Shakespeare from an international perspective. Our mission is to encourage collaboration across the various festivals, and to develop new opportunities and possibilities for theatre and performance makers who want to work with Shakespeare.

The ESFN are delighted to announce a competition call for a small-scale production which will be invited to the member festivals during 2023. This is a world-wide call to find the most exciting and innovative international work.

The production can be a reworking of a Shakespeare text or a piece derived from Shakespeare’s plays. It must be around 60-80 minutes in length. There must be a maximum of 5 in the total touring company and at least 2 actors – this is not a call for a solo show. There should be no touring set, basic elements such as chairs or stage blocks, can be provided by the festivals, and all props and costumes should be able to travel with the actors as standard luggage in no more than 2 normal suitcases.

The ESFN will offer two or three performances at each of the member festivals which are participating in this exciting project. For the second year, six festivals are confirmed as participating (and others may join):

  • York International Shakespeare Festival (UK) 23.04-1.05.2023
  • Itaka Shakespeare Festival (Serbia) 29.06-6.07.2023
  • Gdansk Shakespeare Festival (Poland) 28.07-6.08.2023
  • Verona Shakespeare Festival & Fringe (Italy) 24-31.08.2023
  • Neuss Shakespeare Festival (Germany) 13.05-10.06 .2023
  • Craiova International Shakespeare Festival (Romania) – there is no festival in 2023 but the production will be presented in the regular season between 20-30.04.2023

To apply, you must be available to perform at all six festivals.

You can find out more information about all the festivals, and their dates at www.esfn.eu

All festivals will pay the chosen company that festival’s regular performance fee for all performances given – and in addition will provide accommodation, some local transport and per diems. Once the chosen performance is announced, there will be an opportunity to discuss these conditions with each festival, and to confirm the fee and other details. The company will need to cover transport costs to each festival, and we are confident that as the winners of such a prestigious competition it will be possible to obtain travel support from national or international sources, and the ESFN will assist this in whatever way is most helpful.

As well, all the festivals will look to add value to the visit of the artists through supporting additional days in residence, meetings with other artists, tickets to performances etc.

The schedule is as follows: The call for applications is open until midnight on December 30, 2023, and we will announce the successful production on January 20, 2023

To apply is simple.

We need two documents and a short video

 You should send

1) a cv of your company and your previous achievements,

2) a one page statement of your idea for this performance.

These two documents are critical as this is what all the judges may see.

These two documents should be in English.

In your statement you must confirm that you are available and able to perform at all four of the festivals who are currently participating.

If you would prefer to send a video of your one-page statement, then this must be no longer than 3 minutes. We do require your cv as a written document.

3) As well we ask you to send a two minute video in English, of you speaking to camera about your piece. If it’s a new piece, this is where you can tell us about your plans, if it’s an existing production then tell us about making it and what you’re looking to achieve. You can film this on a phone – we are not assessing video quality, nor are we going to assess the quality of your English presentation. We want to use this to find out a little more about you and how we might work with you in partnership.

In addition, you can send as much supporting material as you wish, links to online material, photographs, and films of previous productions etc, and this will also be available to the judges should they wish to see it. This material can be in any language – it would be helpful if you could label them in English, but not essential.

Applications should be sent by email to shakesphere@esfn.eu and submissions will be accepted until midnight Central European time on Friday December 30, 2022

The Judges decision is final, and we are unable to discuss any unsuccessful submissions with the applicants. Individual festivals may choose to contact artists with whom they would like to have further contact, but this will be outside the remit of this competition.

Open Call for Workshops

Unplugged Dance are looking forward to meeting our new team of collaborators for the second expanded edition of theUnplugged Dance educational program!

Where: Neochori, Lefkada, Greece

When: 7 days between July 31 – Sep 24, 2023

Deadline for applications: December 14, 2022

This call is addressed to dance artists/educators interested in leading a workshop that approaches dance as a practice of embodiment and emerges from personal research.

Candidates must have an original practice/method/technique of their own to share in the form of an open level workshop for professionals and non-professionals. This year, with an intention to deepen more in our quest of how we can experience dance while enriching it with the qualities of somatic practices, we are broadening the spectrum by looking not only for educators but also for choreographers, dance artists and healers. Our interest lies in approaching qualities such as exploration of the soma (body) as perceived from within, observation, care, acceptance, self-reflection, non-goal orientation, non-hurry and non-interventionism, through different paths related to dance. Candidates, depending on their subject of interest, may focus more on one of the following:
performative practices that examine the subjective realities of the dancing body /
self-exploring and creative processes /
healing through dance.

In any case, your work must have already been presented in the form of a workshop, a research and/or a performance.

In Unplugged Dance we choose to emphasize on the importance of embodiment in dance education, research and choreography, in order to approach dance in a more open and inclusive way that can relate to self-determination, empowerment and expression. Such an approach is more than a need to escape from instructions or an image orientated approach. It is a way to strengthen the ability of listening to yourself through listening to your body. A dance -metaphorically and literally speaking- beyond the pursuit of a perfect form, that serves a liberating process of acceptance and joy. Our intention is to meet and highlight dance methods or techniques that may exist around the world and approach dance as a practice of embodiment.

We provide:
-Payment of 720 euros
-Accommodation in bell tent (with bed) and meals per day
-A part of travel expenses for teachers coming from abroad can be paid after arrangement

Requirements:
-Leading a workshop in English for six days (a total of 16,5 hours) during July 31 to September 24, 2023. The week will be determined in mutual consultation
-We will need an invoice from your business entity in order to pay for your services.

How to apply / register:

Please send via email at unpluggedopencall@gmail.com :
– Your CV / bio
– Text (pdf file), photos, video link and any other info you prefer in order to present your workshop
– Small summary (pdf file), 3-9 photos and video link of your workshop, as well as a portrait of yourself that could be used for promotion in case of collaboration
