LIFE Danube Free Sky project logo wanted!

We invite you to participate in the logo competition for the new international project LIFE Danube Free Sky1 that connects 7 countries along the Danube river (AT, SK, HU, HR, RS, BG, RO) with the aim to protect our precious birds from the deaths and injuries caused by the electrocution and collisions with power lines.

The project has started in September 2020 and will last until February 2026. During this period, more than one thousand kilometers of railway and power lines will be surveyed and on the most dangerous sections, the flight diverters will be installed for better visibility and prevention of collisions. Also, the most dangerous utility poles will be insulated to prevent electrocution.

This unique project represents cooperation between 15 partners – 8 electric companies, 1 railway company, 3 national parks and 3 NGOs. The main aim is to create a safer “free sky” place for birds along the „European Amazon” – the extraordinary Danube river.

The project logo will be used for a wide variety of purposes: electronic version on websites, social networks, videos, contracts/other formal documents, etc. The logo will be also used on printed materials, such as notice boards, publications, PR set: e.g. T-shirts, pens, decorative magnets, stickers, etc.

document refers to the archivistic and bibliographical approach that will feature the exhibition committed to offer the audience an accurate reenactment of the artistic experiences produced in the past in the area of Performing Art. Reenactments that will be enriched by critical readings through the involvement of experts in the field.

horizons instead refers to the emphasis the exhibition has decided to place with regard to the most experimental forms in the performative field with the aim of finding new talents.

community, refers to that necessity, through the exhibition CORPO.doc | performance and visual arts, to give birth to work communities with the involvement of public and private institutions.

The first edition of CORPO.doc | performance and visual arts will have the theme “woman’s body”.

Concurs de proiecte. 9G la TNB – ediția a VII-a

Teatrul Național “I.L. Caragiale” din București, prin Centrul de Cercetare și Creație Teatrală “Ion Sava”, lansează a VII-a ediție a programului 9G la TNB (Noua Generație) care se adresează tinerilor creatori de teatru, absolvenți ai facultăților de profil, cu vârsta de până în 35 de ani, neangajați în instituții de spectacol.

9G la TNB. Mod de desfășurare:

– Teatrul Național “I.L.

The European Investment Bank 2021 Open call

The Artists Development Programme (ADP) is a residency and mentorship programme in Luxembourg organised by the EIB Institute. The ADP offers emerging European visual artists under the age of 35 the opportunity to develop their practice in a high quality professional context without any material constraints. It involves the creation of an art project under the mentorship of an internationally renowned artist. The mentors provide tutoring and networking opportunity for young artists, while the exhibition of works from the project at the EIB premises adds the credibility of an established setting. Finnish photographer Jorma Puranen is the mentor of 2019, 2020 and 2021 editions. Previous mentors of the programme are leading British visual artist Darren Almond, Polish conceptual artist Mirosław Bałka and renowned British abstract painter Callum Innes.

The ADP was created in 2013, targeting artists from a selected number of countries. The programme has since consistently broadened its target audience and has grown from one to four residencies, expanding the initial idea to residencies with two angles: geographic and thematic. Each year the geographic angle of the programme shifts its focus within the EU and aims to address the balance of nationality in the EIB’s art collection by selecting emerging artists who come from countries under-represented in the collection.

The second thematic angle addresses EIB strategic priorities and current topical issues in Europe, building on the momentum of issues of public concern in EU debates. Previous calls were: “The Imprint of Man – Representing the Anthropocene” from 2014 to 2017; “Water & Ocean Preservation” – addressing environmental and climate action – in collaboration with Parley for the Oceans in 2016; “Beyond Borders” in 2017 and “Cultural Heritage: Dealing with History through Art” in the framework of the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage.

For the 2021 edition, the EIB launched two calls for applications targeting visual artists (EU nationals, aged less than 35) with a thematic focus on:

The EIB Institute will cover the artist’s travel costs to and from Luxembourg (for the residency), and to and from Jorma Puranen’s studio (before the start of the residency). The artist will receive a €100 (one hundred euros) flat-rate daily allowance to cover their living costs during the residency and all or part of the production costs, and will be provided with a living/working space. In addition to the above, the artist will be granted a contribution towards production of €500 (five hundred euros) at the beginning of the residency and a success fee of €1 000 (one thousand euros) at the end of the residency, provided that they have produced a work or body of works.

The residency in Luxembourg will take place between early May and end of June 2021. Upon completion of the residency, the EIB may consider acquiring an artwork produced on-site by the artist.

The application is online, with deadline 10 January 2021.

Artists Development Programme 2021 call for applications (Disruption: The Imprint of Man)

The European Investment Bank (EIB) Institute is pleased to announce the 2021 edition of its Artists Development Programme (ADP). The EIB Institute is looking for ONE visual artist (born after 1 January 1986) from an EU Member State to work on the theme “Disruption: The Imprint of Man”.

“Disruption: The Imprint of Man” aims to offer a unique vantage point on the Anthropocene. Building on the past residency theme “Anthropocene – The Imprint of Man” (2014-2017), “Disruption” broadens the focus beyond the environment to include topical social issues in the EU: the decline of solidarity and respect as values, generational clashes, and the meaning of intra and international relations. The call encourages the creation of works of art that interrogate human behaviour and its consequences. “Disruption” is therefore understood not only in its physical sense, but also as a social, cultural and behavioural phenomenon.

The ADP offers emerging European visual artists a 6-8 week residency in Luxembourg, enabling them to develop their practice and create a new (body of) work(s), boosted by the mentorship of a renowned artist. In 2021, the recipient will be mentored by acclaimed Finnish artist Jorma Puranen.

Eligibility criteria

  • Born after 1 January 1986 (in the case of an artist duo, both members must be aged 35 or under)
  • EU national (in the case of an artist duo, both members must be EU nationals)
  • Fluent in English

Budget and duration

Application procedure

All applications must be submitted through the online form available here.

Requirements

– A CV in English (maximum four pages) including education, work experience, solo and group shows, and media coverage

– A letter of motivation (in English) with ideas to be explored during the residency, in line with the proposed theme (maximum 1 000 words)

– A portfolio (maximum eight pages in A4 PDF format) to showcase a representative selection of the applicant’s works

– Names and contact details of two professional referees familiar with the applicant’s art

– A brief reference to how the applicant found out about the programme

Please note that proof of nationality and age will be requested if shortlisted.

Selection procedure

A jury – consisting of Jorma Puranen (the mentor), members of the EIB Arts Committee and external art advisers – will select the candidate based on the artistic quality of their work, their motivation and their potential to make the most of the opportunity offered by the residency, as well as the relevance of their practice to the cultural context of the EIB Institute.

The selected candidate will be informed of the jury’s decision by email in March 2021.

Call for contributions: Truth and Belief – HAS Magazine

DDL: January 31, 2021

Rewards: publication in magazine

HAS Magazine launches a call for contributions for its third issue to be published in May 2021

The goal of HAS Magazine is to discuss pressing topics through the analysis of a wide range of themes in the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts. Conceived as a magazine for the broadest possible range of readers, HAS offers a space for staging the most creative, enlightening, imaginative, and socially relevant interactions of the humanities and the arts.

HAS Magazine is an initiative of the Humanities, Arts and Society project with UNESCO-MOST, the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences, Mémoire de l’Avenir and Global Chinese Arts & Culture Society.

We welcome contributions from scholars, researchers, critics, artists, and any interested parties who find the above aims important and would like to be part of the project. HAS Magazine is not an academic journal and texts should be written in a language accessible to a broad, non-expert audience. HAS is not a commercial venture and is available online for free in English, French and Chinese in order to reach the broadest possible audience. Due to the non-profit nature of the publication, contributions are on a voluntary basis.

The published contributions include essays, reviews, critiques, interviews, artistic projects, video and photo reportages, and news. The editorial committee is constituted by members of UNESCO-MOST, the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences and Mémoire de l’Avenir.

Politically biased or discriminatory content will not be accepted. Promotional or commercial content should be avoided.

The theme of the third issue is Truth and Belief. We aim to investigate this topic from a multi- and cross-disciplinary perspective—including but not limited to the visual and performing arts, philosophy, history, anthropology, archaeology, literature, sociology, economics, political science, and humanities scholarship.

More information about the theme
In the 21st century, information is produced and shared at a record pace, with unprecedented reach. Web 2.0—aka the Participative Internet—is radically transforming our ways of consuming information. This development is both positive and negative: On the one hand it allows people to organize and crowdsource ideas more efficiently, but on the other it is increasing the amount of false information being spread without fact-checking. Conflict, discrimination, ideological blindness, the denial of global warming and COVID-19, and beyond, are nurtured by dis- and mis-information that is difficult to regulate. Although fake news is not a new phenomenon, the broad information flow of today, enabled by social media, has allowed it to flourish. From these channels, a culture based on influence has emerged, in which personalities can directly communicate with followers who trust them, and affect their behaviour. As we are bombarded with information created by influencers with different interests and intentions, how do we distinguish between facts, opinions, and beliefs?

Critical thinking and understanding have become more important than ever amidst this global information flow. The role and responsibility of education—and actors such as artists, journalists, and scientists—has always been to inform and to question. Their domains—the arts, humanities, and sciences—are the principal drivers of critical thinking, social investigation, and active learning. By questioning dogmas and exploring new ways of living, they have the capacity to upend outdated paradigms and help society in its transformative endeavour. They are important in fighting denialism and confirmation bias, which favour facts that are coherent with one’s already-held beliefs. These disciplines encourage inclusive understanding, which helps us see that our local actions have global impact.

In the third issue of HAS Magazine, we seek to explore the flow of information, knowledge, bias, and the notion of truth.

Investigations may cover fields and questions such as epistemology, the social construction of reality, the Information Age, influence, cognitive bias, cognitive dissonance, anti-intellectualism, scientific ignorance, and denialism.

Artistically, this may include photography, illusionary art, forgeries, fakes, art as information, and artistic investigations of objectivity/subjectivity and the nature of truth and reality.

Questions may include (but are not limited to): How can we distinguish between objective and subjective, or self-serving facts? What is the place of truth in current society? How do truth, reason, and belief relate to each other? What is the role of satire, and what is its relation to truth/falsity? What is the role of art in relation to truth, falsity, and bias? How can art and art education help develop critical thinking? What is the place of scepticism in today’s society, in the positive and negative sense? What are the advantages of scepticism, and what are its limits? How can the various forms and branches of art contribute to the investigation of the above issues?

We invite researchers, creative thinkers, and practising artists to submit contributions examining any aspects of the above questions.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Contributors may submit texts in English or French. The language should be accessible to a broad audience and non-experts of the subject.

Contributions can be up to 3000 words in length and include 3-8 images minimum 300 dpi

Contributions can also be presented in video (MP4) or audio formats (MP3).

Citations and references should use the Chicago-style.

Submissions accompanied by a short biography (100 words) and abstract
(100 words), should be sent to magazine@humanitiesartsandsociety.org.

For questions and more information: contact@humanitiesartsandsociety.org.

The deadline for submissions is 31 January, 2021 at midnight, Central European Time.

ELIA ACADEMY 2021 – Call for contributions

ELIA is excited to announce that the 10th ELIA Academy will be held from 19 – 21 May 2021, hosted by LUCA School of Arts and KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture.
ELIA Academy brings together lecturers and students to exchange teaching and learning practices in higher arts education.
Representatives of ELIA member institutions are invited to contribute to the next edition’s programme, exploring the idea of transferable creative intelligence and the concept of the ‘extended artist’.
Be part of the ELIA Academy experience and set the pace in arts education.

This is a critical moment to think about the purpose of creative education and the wider contribution art students can make to a progressive agenda for change within and beyond the creative industries.
At ELIA, we recognise that this is a time of social instability and cultural change. This moment in time can be a chance for re-imagining rather than adapting.

The <extended art student> is looking for curricula and pedagogy that embed shifting digital paradigms, altered skillsets, equality, innovative research initiatives, transdisciplinarity and horizontal collaboration with partners and associates that are traditionally not part of higher arts education.

  • How should we prepare art students for an environment of constant change, flexibility and adaptability?
  • How do we develop anti-discriminatory pedagogy?
  • How should we help students develop transferable creative intelligence that will enable them to work within or beyond their discipline?

Address the questions related to pandemic and uncertainty; equality, diversity and anti-racism; transferable creative intelligence in higher arts education with us. Grasp the chance to present your teaching and learning practice, exchange knowledge and try out innovative methods at ELIA Academy 2021 – a place of experimentation and sharing, a bootcamp for lecturers, art educators, artistic researchers and students.
Showcase your research amongst colleagues from all over the world and play an active role in the development of teaching techniques in the arts.

As a platform for educational innovation, the ELIA Academy encourages submissions that are experimental, participatory, energising, inventive and provocative.

Call for Papers: CINETic Review 2(1).2020 Adaptive Storytelling

Adaptive Storytelling

Story lies at the basis of human experience of life. We see stories in a leaf floating, in a cup of tea, a natural disaster or in a moving dot on a screen. We tell stories to communicate with each other, to make sense of the world we live in, to entertain ourselves and our fellows.

Story bears a conflict between fixed form and fluidity.

Actors adapt to their audiences, especially in comedy performances. Commedia dell’Arte involved a continuous dialogue between improvisation and pre-written texts. Forms of improvisation theatre use low but efficient techniques to build adaptive storytelling.

While a story can be fixed in a script, stories time travel and are re-told. The printing press fixed the novels in books as a culmination of storytelling. Captured movement fixed stories on celluloid and made actors into stars. Later, on in the digital environment, what was fixed became fluid again. The end can become the beginning, the dead can resurrect on screen and entertain us once again with vidding, produsage or  datamoshing becoming a widespread practice in online video, content audiences interacting with ready made content in shaping new stories.

With the advent of stronger and stronger computing power, a new ideal is emerging: interactive storytelling.

Story is strongly linked to the technology and the medium through which it is told. Besides delivering targeted commercials, nowadays AI can simulate speech and draft scripts. Games use AI in emulating non-human players for bringing action and realism to digital worlds. Will AI overcome the need for a good story for structure? Will we be living the dream of a digital storytelling machine?

CINETic Review 2(1).2020 focusses on technologies and techniques used for creating live or recorded adaptive stories. We look forward to papers publishing original research results or case studies from fields of performance, film, gaming, interactive art, social platforms, and interdisciplinary art-science-technology approaches on interactive storytelling practices.

All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted articles will be published in the CINETic Review

CALL FOR PRESENCE

In theory there is no difference between Michelangelo, Louise Bourgeois, Martha Graham and Simone de Beauvoir: they all start out from that empty moment, that blank canvas, and then decide when they will let the world in. The time Michelangelo spent staring at his block of marble before he carved the Pietà: that is noiseless time.

Nowadays, when art is systematically being associated with the realm of commodities, when the work of art needs to meet the demands of production and deliver results saleable on the market, with MILL’s Beauty Salon we want to mark out the moment of noiseless time – when the realms of beauty and reality come together and feed the artistic process.

With MILL’s Reality Salon we want to address the question of whether the era of BEAUTY is over and whether REALITY has now become the main topic of artistic interest. Is it the case that the true moment of exploration occurs when one word is mistaken for another? We wish that the artists of the salon, instead of going in one direction or another, remain open for the clash of these two notions – in its poetic and formal quest.

MILL’s Beauty Salon was born out of the desire to continue the multidisciplinary artistic exploration that Needcompany began more than 30 years ago. We want to create a space in which to keep heritage on the move and open ourselves up for new encounters with artists of different generations, experiences and visions. As one of the most funded independent theatre organizations in Flanders, we feel an urge to share resources in the current crisis, to create possibilities for those in need and to create awareness of the sensibility and precariousness of those who keep the arts alive.

MILL’s Reality Salon is related to MILL – Needcompany’s artistic house in the heart of Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, which, since March 2017, has been a place for thinking, creating, rehearsing, connecting and exchanging.

MILL’s Beauty Salon is neither a residency nor a production-oriented programme. We are explicitly committed to supporting artists in thinking, dreaming and creating timelessly. Our wish is to support the artistic process by providing an environment and the required resources.

To apply for MILL’s Reality Salon, we are only inviting artists (whether individuals or collectives) who have never collaborated with Needcompany before.

The budget of MILL’s Beauty Salon is 10 000 euro, which will be granted to one or several artists, depending on the specific needs of their proposals.

In addition to financial support, Needcompany offers support in kind: a residency room at MILL (writers’ room), use of the studio at MILL (play room), and a dramaturgical dialogue with the members of Needcompany. The selected artists will be given the opportunity to present their work to the public at MILL.

The fellowship is open to all nationalities & ages and designed for artists who have developed an independent body of work over a number of years.

We encourage applications from artists who have a link with Brussels, the heart of international thinking.

The timeframe of the fellowship is February–December 2021.

The jury will consist of the representatives of the artists, staff and board members of Needcompany, and a guest jury member.

Open Call: 2021 Photography and Social Justice Fellowship

Magnum Foundation’s Photography and Social Justice Program builds capacity through critical explorations of photography and social change.

Each year, the program supports a diverse, international group of Photography and Social Justice Fellows who are passionate about challenging injustice, pursuing social equality, and advancing human rights through photography. The program provides space for interdisciplinary experimentation, mentored project development, and cross-cultural, critical discourse for developing new approaches to socially engaged documentary practice. With intensive mentorship, artist- and expert-led workshops, peer-to-peer learning, and production funds, this program prepares fellows to make effective creative projects and become leaders who inspire social movements, pose difficult questions, and stimulate debate and awareness about pressing social issues.

Magnum Foundation covers the cost of participation, including all educational and programmatic activities. Fellows also receive a modest stipend to support the production of their projects. The program is produced in partnership with the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism.

The Photography and Social Justice Program takes place during May through October 2021 and  includes a core seminar course, workshops, mentored project development, and mentored production. Due to COVID-19, the 2021 program will be held remotely and meetings will occur with consideration of participants’ timezones.

Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Fellows are early- to mid-career photographers or individuals in aligned disciplines who are motivated to deepen their engagement with photography and social justice.

This program especially aims to support people of color, women, gender non-conforming individuals, LGBTQ individuals, individuals who are part of racial, ethnic, or religious minority groups, and others whose authorship is unevenly represented within the field of documentary photography.

Applications are due December 1, 2020 at 11:59pm ET.

Photography and Social Justice Fellows are selected through an open, international call for applications. Candidates will be notified about their status of their application in early February 2021.

Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed and final decisions will be made by the end of February 2021.

There are no exceptions to the deadline. We encourage you to get your application in before the official due date to avoid any technical issues that might interfere with a timely submission.

Students‘ Platform: Call for entries open until November 30, 2020

Freiburger Film Forum

Festival of Transcultural Cinema

Our festivals’ students’ platform calls for first and final works such as documentaries, feature films and short films covering inter- and sociocultural issues. With our selection we aim to give an insight into the diversity, creativity, and originality of emerging filmmakers & visual anthropologists from all around the world – with no restrictions on theme, duration, or form.

We are looking for films that explore the complexity of our world by telling individual stories within their local contexts. Students of visual anthropology, media arts, filmmaking as well as socially engaged filmmakers without any formal study in these areas are welcome to submit their work. What matters most to us is the film’s attempt to listen and observe closely, the filmmaker’s sensitive engagement with its protagonists and subjects as well as its originality in terms of both content and form.

Collaborative, participative methods as well as experimental approaches to conveying social-cultural issues are most welcome. Just as in recent years, we also aim to create a space for VR projects and interactive documentaries.

Looking forward to submissions from all around the globe!
