The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is pleased to announce an open call for non-fiction narrative audio works created by producers from the Central and Eastern European region. The competition is being held in cooperation with Radio Atlas as part of the activities accompanying the institute’s Digital Cultures conference to be held in September 2018.

The human voice was a vehicle for passing down history long before writing systems and manuscripts took over. For centuries, stories and tales passed along by word of mouth would sustain local mythologies as well able a motor for social change. Today, at a time when we are witnesses of global dynamic development, what kind of stories do we tell using sound? What role does a narrative soundscape play in storytelling? How can we tell stories in such a way that they are as immersive as possible for the listener?

The aim of the competition is to promote the most engaging audio producers from the region and to raise awareness of narrative audio forms for creators from the following countries: Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine and Hungary.

The competition is open to participants above 18 years of age. Works should be no longer than 10 minutes, submitted in WAV or MP3 format with a transcript of the original work, as well as a corresponding transcript in English.

Works, as well as an accompanying author bio, can be sent until 10th August 2018 to the address: digitalcultures@iam.pl. The best works will be chosen by a jury consisting of:

John Beauchamp – Head of Audio, Culture.pl, and broadcaster
Cathy FitzGerald – radio producer and educator
Eleanor McDowall – creator of the Radio Atlas website and producer
Olga Mickiewicz – producer and member of the EBU Radio Features Group, Polish Radio Reportage and Documentary Studio
Anna Szylar – digital culture expert at the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, head of the Digital Cultures curatorial team

Authors of the top three audio works will receive invitations to attend the Adam Mickiewicz Institute’s Digital Cultures conference in Warsaw on 24th-25th September 2018, which will focus on audio as one of its main themes. The best audio work will be featured on the Radio Atlas website.

We offer:

A unique international festival that is small in scale but high in profile and welcoming in atmosphere.
The performance art depot’s stage and team. pad is an extraordinary and beautiful independent venue with a committed team, both homebase to artists Schmitt&Schulz and a platform for introducing innovative, experimental theatre, dance, performance, live art and other forms of contemporary performing arts.
An interested and open audience. Press as well as curators and artistic directors of other festivals and theatres will be invited.
A modest performance fee and travel expense allowance. We also take care of accommodation and catering.

We look for:

Unusual performance projects with diverse artistic backgrounds: They may rely on light and sound or include video art, digital art, multi-media and/or be grounded in the physical, in choreography or dance.
Productions that are adaptable to an unusual stage with basic technical standard.
Small teams that should ideally consist of no more than five people. Please be prepared to travel via low price airlines or other low cost travel opportunities.

Applications via e-mail to the address below which include a brief CV or portrayal of your company, project description and online video documentation of your perfor-mance – preferably longer continuous material. Without this we can unfortunately not in-vite you. Please DO NOT send high-resolution photos due to our mail capacity.
