Selection of 20 students for the 2025 Arts in Venice Summer School, ‘The Shape of Water’

Art. 1 – Presentation
The Venetian Higher Education Institutions – the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, Benedetto Marcello
Music Conservatory, Ca’ Foscari University and Iuav University – are partners in the Study in Venice
network and in 2025 they have established the 3rd edition of the Arts in Venice Summer School, ‘The
Shape of Water’ so as to offer selected students English-taught courses of excellence in an international
context.
The Summer School is offered to students from any Italian or international universities, fine art
academies and music conservatories, as well as to artists, teachers and scholars with a relevant
background and a strong interest in the topics of the Summer School.
Candidates are expected to be familiar with at least one of the following areas – Archaeology,
Architecture, Art and Music History, Performing Arts and Environmental Science – and to be especially
willing to get a deeper knowledge about the city of Venice and its cultural and environmental heritage.
Selected candidates can benefit from the Programme:
a) to complete their studies at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, Benedetto Marcello Music
Conservatory, Ca’ Foscari University and Iuav University through recognition of the credits
acquired;
b) to develop their curriculum vitae in preparation for further studies;
c) to come into contact with different teaching methods in the humanities field;
d) to take part in an intensive final workshop;
e) to enrich their personal development through a knowledge experience set on site within an
intercultural context;
f) to live in the historic centre of Venice together with fellow students in international student
residences.
Art. 2 – Arts in Venice Summer School, ‘The Shape of Water’: courses, structure and credit
recognition
- 20 students will be accepted for the Arts in Venice Summer School, ‘The Shape of Water’ in 2025. Further admissions up to 5 more places might be considered by the Selection Committee
depending on courses and lab facilities.
- Courses are taught by scholars and researchers from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Iuav
University of Venice, the Venice Academy of Fine Arts and Benedetto Marcello Music
Conservatory, in the areas of Archaeology, Architecture, Art and Music History, Performing Arts
and Environmental Science, and are held in English (the official language of the programme).
- In 2025 the Arts in Venice Summer School, ‘The Shape of Water’ will hold the following courses:
Archaeology, Medieval Art, Contemporary Art, History of Architecture, Urban Planning,
Environmental Sciences, Venetian Music Performance and Research, Music History.
All courses will focus on Venice as a case study and students will have the opportunity to put
into practice their knowledge and ideas during a final workshop.
Senior students from Iuav University of Venice will assist and support the students in their
studies and during their stay in Venice.
- The programme runs for two weeks from June 30th until July 11th, 2025. Classes are held in
the four institutions – the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, Benedetto Marcello Music Conservatory,
Ca’ Foscari University and Iuav University –, however, on-site learning represents the core of
the Summer School programme: students will have the opportunity to see and experience in
the real city what they have been taught.
- The Summer School runs for a total of 54 hours. If a student is unable to attend any of the
sessions (classes, labs, field trips), the course professor/the tutor/the Summer School office
must be notified, and valid motivation must be provided.
- Students who do not attend at least 75% of the whole school hours will not be eligible to obtain
the certificate described below.
- Upon successful completion of the Arts in Venice Summer School, ‘The Shape of Water’,
students will obtain a certificate of attendance; credits might be recognised by each participant’s
home institution, and up to 4 credits (ECTS/CFU) by one of the participating universities in the
Study in Venice network, based on their respective governing rules.

Art. 3 – Admission Requirements
- Applicants must have a good working knowledge of English (a solid B2 is expected).
Art. 4 –Applications

- After logging in, you will be able to send your application through: Menu > Student services >
Applications.
- Applicants must include the following documents during their application:
a. curriculum vitae in English in Europass format (https://europass.europa.eu/en/create-
europass-cv);
b. motivation letter (max. 250 words, in English) where candidates outline their goals (what
they want to achieve), their expectations (what additional experiences can the Summer
School offer them) and their attitude (why they think they are a good candidate);
c. transcript of records (in English, for students currently enrolled in
university/academy/conservatory) and/or diploma (in English);
d. copy of valid identity document (passport or ID card).
- Applications may be rejected for any of the following reasons:
a. received after the deadline;
b. incomplete or incorrect;
c. missing documents.
- The application deadline is April 7th, 2025.
Art. 5 – Selection and overall ranking
- The selection process will be carried out by a Selection Committee, to be nominated by the four Study in Venice institutions.
- Students will be ranked according to the following criteria:
a. the overall score will be based on:
- 50% curriculum vitae and relevant study and/or work experience;
- 50% motivation letter.
b. In case the criteria listed at art. 5.2.a will not be enough to have a clear assessment of one or more students, the Selection Committee may decide, in its sole discretion, to schedule some remote oral interviews in order to ascertain the presence of the requirements listed above;
c. should two or more candidates attain an equal placing in the ranking, precedence will be given to the younger candidate.
- The rankings will be available on https://www.studyinvenice.it/en no later than April 16th, 2025. The publication constitutes formal notification.
- Candidates who are ranked eligible will be admitted according to available places on condition
they accept their place within the specified time frame (see art.6).
Art. 6 – Final admission, fees and payment
- Candidates who have been selected for the programme will be required to confirm their place
through payment of the summer school fees within 7 days following the publication of the overall
rankings.
- Registration fees are € 750,00
- All payment details will be sent in the confirmation email.
Art.7 – Information on Personal Data Processing
- The data controller is University Iuav of Venice it in the person of the Rector Magnificent, Santa

- The University has appointed the „Data Protection Officer”, who can be contacted by writing to
the e-mail address: dpo@iuav.it or dpo@pec.iuav.it.
- Personal data categories, purposes and legal basis of data processing
The data processing in question involves the provision of personal data and data relating to
previous study and professional experience. Unless the selection procedure is for protected
categories, it is not necessary to provide data of a sensitive nature (for example, data
concerning health status, sexual orientation or political or trade union opinions); candidates are
therefore requested not to provide such data, unless deemed necessary for optimal evaluation
of the position selection procedure. The processing of personal data isaimed solely at the
completion of the selection procedure and will take place in a way and within the limits necessary
to pursue the aforementioned purpose. The legal basis for this treatment is represented by art.
6.1.e) of the Regulations („execution of a task of public interest or connected to the exercise of
public powers”). The processing of personal data is based on the principles of correctness,
lawfulness and transparency and the protection of the privacy and rights of the data subject, as
well as the additional principles established by art. 5 of the Regulations.
