Athens Summer School in Visual Ethnographic Practices

The Ethnofest – Athens Ethnographic Film Festival, in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam (UvA), organises the intensive “Athens Summer School in Visual Ethnographic Practices”. 

We are excited to welcome you to Athens from July 7th to July 27th. During your time here, you will immerse yourself in the city’s rich offerings, spark your creativity through the visual stimuli of your urban surroundings, participate in collaborative practices, and enhance your skills in ethnographic methods.

About the School

Visual anthropology and multimodal ethnography are increasingly crucial for those engaged in ethnographic research, visual analysis, or material culture studies, as well as for critical discussions about cinema and various forms of cultural expression. By exploring the methodologies available and reflecting on their application in urban settings, we aim to highlight the significance of visual ethnographic practices and documentary filmmaking.

The city of Athens offers an excellent setting for participants to explore what camera-based research can accomplish. During summer school, we will concentrate on visual theory and the practical application of audio-visual tools, while the courses will examine historical and contemporary examples of ethnographic documentaries. 

Structure of the school

The school will run from Monday, July 7th, 2025, until Sunday, July 27th, 2025. 

During these 3 weeks, the students will be:

Attending lectures

Planning small-scale research

Conducting fieldwork

Receiving supervision for their ethnographic projects

Filming 

Editing

Students will collaborate in teams of three to explore the process of creating a 10-minute short film. This project will provide them with valuable hands-on experience and creative skills. A selection of these films will be showcased in a special section called “Initiations” at the Ethnofest – Athens Ethnographic Film Festival in November of the same year.

The seminars and group meetings will run daily in a space situated at the centre of Athens, where the participants will be able to participate in the programme while taking inspiration from their urban surroundings. Field research will take place in selected areas and locations around the city. The seminars will provide students with a general framework of visual anthropology/ethnographic theory and methodology and a basic knowledge of all the steps of ethnographic video production. At the same time, the seminars will introduce them to contemporary approaches to field research in an urban setting through lectures, practical exercises, and guided walks. Students should expect to have one or two sessions per day (e.g. 3h- 6h), while, they will conduct fieldwork and filming in parallel.

Students are encouraged, though not required, to read the literature before their arrival in Greece to prepare for the seminars.

Aim

The school aims to provide the opportunity for students to experience filming in a highly diverse and multi-layered urban setting and obtain an overview of current debates and research topics in visual anthropology and multi-modal ethnography. By learning and participating in the film production process, the students gain practical experience in a new context, develop their skills, work in a team, make new contacts, and present their research topics.

Methodology

The summer school expects students to participate actively in all the courses and conduct visual ethnographic field research in group teams. Their small-scale ethnographic projects could focus on diverse research objects such as life stories,  popular beliefs, urban legends, material culture, performative practices, and intangible culture (music, dance, crafts, etc.). Students are encouraged to contact various people to discuss, interview, and materialize their topics, focusing their filming ethnographic process on specific neighborhoods, social networks, civil society organizations, etc. Broader societal questions/approaches that include politics, identities, gender perspective, immigration/migration, religious beliefs, social class, and human rights, among others, can be addressed and framed in concrete ethnographic filming projects. 

Participants will record and edit original filming material, which will be discussed under the guidance of experienced staff and presented/screened in the format of a short documentary at the end of the school. The supervisors will guide and encourage students to follow a clear idea and an ethnographically meaningful narrative plot to create their storytelling.  

Course requirements, language, and evaluation

The course is open to students from the last year of their BA to Master’s degree and first year PhD. All lectures will be delivered in English. The participant’s performance during courses, their final product (short film), and a one-pager presenting the film will be discussed at the end of the school. The student groups also have the opportunity to submit their films – with minor revisions and corrections – to the special section of Ethnofest – Athens Ethnographic Film Festival titled “Initiations.”

Courses period, dates, and times

The school consists of 21 intensive days with lectures, field research, filming, and editing. Classes, including breaks, are daily for the first half of the school term. The rest of the time, students will conduct fieldwork research, filming, and editing under the supervision of their tutors.

Students are encouraged to bring their own equipment and laptops in order to make their training process smoother; however, the summer school will provide in-rotation cameras, audio equipment, and laptops for editing per group of students. Please fill in the relevant section of the application form.  

The number of participating students is limited (max. 18 to 21). 

Costs and subsidies

The total cost of the course is 850€ for EU and international students. Greek students are eligible for a concession fee of 600€. Students are expected to cover their flights from their country of residence to Athens and back, as well as their accommodation and lunch and dinner costs. Upon confirmation of the participants, the selected students will be contacted to discuss the prospect of sharing accommodation. 

Important information for candidates applying to the Athens Summer School in Visual Ethnographic Practices

As the programme takes place during the summer season, when the temperature in Greece is relatively high, we recommend that the participants keep this in mind while preparing for their stay. Lightweight clothing, portable fans, water bottles, and hats would be of great use.

What to expect

Three intensive weeks of theory courses, stimulating discussions and critical engagement, introduction to technological media to facilitate your filmmaking process, and consulting sessions with your tutors. Also, walks and cultural visits. These days will be heavily loaded to give the participants a complete sense of what visual ethnographic practices entail. For the smooth flow of the programme, it is essential to acknowledge the importance of team bonding, cultivating safe spaces for collective discussions, troubleshooting, and horizontal decision-making in the working groups. 

What not to expect

This is an ethnographic documentary filmmaking programme. Our primary concern is that the participants leave feeling richer in ethnographic documentary filmmaking rather than necessarily acquiring technological novelties to create a highly professional visual product. Prior knowledge of technical skills such as editing and shooting is appreciated and will be considered when forming teams to ensure skill diversity in each group. The equipment used will complement these goals but is not our main priority.

Course objectives
The objective of the course is to acquire the skills and working methods in serial scriptwriting.
Didactic program

The course takes place over a period of 5 non-consecutive weeks, structured in 3 modules.
During the first online module, developed over 8 lessons, students will be introduced to the fundamentals
of television seriality, the construction of a serial character, and the various possible interconnections
between multiple narrative lines. The structures of some successful series and their pilot episodes will
be analyzed.
The second module will be held in presence and will be devoted to the analysis of the series projects of
the students. With the support of the teachers, and the constant feedback of their fellow students, each
student will develop a standard subject.
One morning will be dedicated to a visit to Cinecittà, followed by the meeting with a great master of
Italian cinema.
The third and final phase will consist of 2 online meetings, during which the students will submit their
pitches to a production teacher, who will help them find the strengths and weaknesses of the presentation
in order to make it more effective.

Outcoming occupational profile
Competence in serial scriptwriting.

1) The applicant must be in possession, on the date of signature of the application, of a secondary school
diploma of second degree or other equivalent qualification (if foreign translated under the applicable
law) which, regardless of nationality, access to university studies.
2) Over 18 years of age.
3) Proficiency in English language

Commission and evaluation criteria
The Commission is appointed by the Director of the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema.
The members are chosen on the basis of proven artistic and/or educational skills, respecting the principle
of gender balance and in order to promote equal opportunities. The Director of the Scuola Nazionale
decides on the selection procedures for admission to the course. The judgement of the Commissions in
the selection phases is final. No reasons are given for non-admission.

Reference to general aims and principles
This call for proposals follows the following principles:

• DNSH “do no significant harm”, therefore it is expected that the types of activities planned should not have negative impacts on the environment;
• Climate and Digital Tagging, the planned activities should therefore place particular emphasis on the aspect of the natural world and the digital world;
• Gender equality, the activities must be accessible to everyone;
• development of young people, so that training becomes an instrument for developing personal skills
  and abilities with a view to promoting integration, especially among young people, in working world
• reduction of territorial disparities, so that activities must constitute an inclusive and aggregating

the awareness of acting all about the camera through Micromimica, a discipline codified and taught only
at the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema. After having acquired all the necessary information about the
articulation of the cinematographic language that is determined through the use of different camera
lenses – with the guidance of the teacher – students will be guided in making a self-tape in English. One
morning will be dedicated to a visit to Cinecittà, followed by the meeting with a great master of Italian
cinema.

Teatrul Național Aureliu Manea Turda deschide un #opencall prin care caută dramaturgie pentru copii!

Căutăm texte pentru copii care nu au fost încă montate, scrise în ultimii ani (cât mai recente).

Noi vom alege o parte dintre ele pentru a le transforma în spectacole-lectură și pentru a le publica într-o antologie în cadrul Turda International Theatre Festival.

Căutăm aproximativ 20 de persoane pentru o filmare ce va avea loc la UNATC pe 24 martie, între 9:00 și 12:00. Scena se desfășoară într-o sală de facultate, așa că avem nevoie de participanți care să arate ca studenți – îmbrăcați casual, cu caiete, cărți, pixuri etc.

Pe platou vom asigura o masă de snacks-uri, apă, cafea și pizza.

Hoinar.Crossroads, proiect conex festivalului Hoinar.Odyssey 2025, este o serie de 5 instalații artistice ce vor reflecta cele 5 spectacole din festival. Fiecare instalație va include muzică nouă (compusă și imprimată/cântată live de studenți de la UNMB) și un scenariu de teatru non-verbal sau coregrafie care să exprime tematica din spectacol: călătoria (inițiere, căutare de sine, imigrație, călătoria sufletului între lumi, dilema răscrucii). Este de preferat ca instalațiile să fie făcute sub formă de scurt film, sau un performance care folosește un spațiu de dimensiuni restrânse. Esențial este ca ele să conțină atât un element muzical, cât și unul dramatic.

5 echipe de studenți selectați din cadrul UNATC și UNMB vor lucra fiecare la câte o instalație artistică ce va fi expusă în foaierul teatrului Act în fiecare seară de spectacol (cu excepția ultimei instalații care va fi expusă pe scena Ateneului Român).

Echipa de mentori din partea festivalului este formată din
– Actrița și cântăreața Sarah Gabriel (visiting professor la Royal Academy of Music, Londra)
– Regizorul Michael Hoffman (regizor a numeroase lung metraje printre care The Last Station – 2009, cu Helen Mirren și Christopher Plummer, și The Best of Me – 2014, cu James Marden și Michelle Monaghan)
– Pianistul Florian Mitrea (Royal Academy of Music, Londra)
Îndrumarea studenților se va face prioritar în mediul online, dată fiind echipa de profesori cu rezidențe în Marea Britanie și Statele Unite.

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP:

TAIFAS – The Balkan Film and Culture Festival is offering a Research Fellowship Program for young researchers under 35, focusing on key topics related to Romanian and Balkan cinema. The fellowship includes a residency in Timisoara, Romania during the festival (October 13-19, 2025) and a research paper submission by November 8, 2025, with a 1000 EUR stipend and additional support for travel and accommodation. Applicants must submit their research proposals by April 15, 2025.

Developing Art lansează un nou call: cercetător/cercetătoare interesat/ă de intersecția artei și tehnologiei!

De data asta, ne adresăm masteranzilor, doctoranzilor, asistenților de cercetare & cercetătorilor pe care îi preocupă zonele de intersecție dintre cercetarea artistică și cea tehnologică – noi vă oferim cadrul tocmai bun de observație practică: proiectul Performing the digital. in progress.

Contextul în care vei interveni

15 studenți la facultățile de arte și 4 mentori cu interese și experiență în coregrafie, muzică/sunet, arte vizuale și noile media vor intra, în săptămâna 13-17 aprilie, la Centrul Naţional al Dansului Bucureşti, într-un proces de cercetare colaborativă.

Scopul lor e de a chestiona artistic interacțiunea dintre tehnologie, corp și comunicare și o vor face lucrând împreună, în echipe interdisciplinare. După zilele de laborator, vor avea timp o lună să creeze o serie de lucrări artistice pe care Goethe-Institut Bucuresti le va găzdui, în perioada 21-27 mai, într-o expoziție multimedia.

Ce vei face tu?

Ca cercetător, vei însoți laboratorul artistic și perioada de lucru propriu-zis a tinerilor artiști și vei observa procesele interdisciplinare care s-a conturat. Le vei ilustra, apoi, într-o prezentare publică și un material scris. Textul scris va constitui baza unui viitor material științific publicabil într-o revistă de specialitate sau va completa un articol/o cercetare aflat/ă deja în stadiul de dezvoltare. Bineînțeles, cercetarea ta din cadrul proiectului va fi remunerată.

Asociația „Acasă la Hundorf” organizează programul anual de rezidențe artistice Școala de-Acasă / ȘAH, destinate artiștilor emergenți care activează în toate mediile artistice – incluzând film, teatru, literatură, arhitectură, etc. Prin rezidențe de creație petrecute în mijlocul unei comunități rurale prietenoase, oferim
timp și spațiu participanților pentru a-și dezvolta propriile proiecte.

Pentru prima dată, în ediția din 2025 introducem un focus tematic: MUNCA

Munca e ubicuă. O găsim în toate cotloanele, în toate formele și funcțiile posibile. Ne structurează existența, ne susține identitatea personală, și ne ține în viață. Munca e în fabrici și uzine, dar și acasă, în familie; într-o prietenie, și chiar și în iubire. E prezentă până și în pauze, când nu avem stare și ”muncim” pentru a deveni mai buni pe plan spiritual, psihologic, fizic.

În ediția din acest an a rezidențelor ȘAH suntem curioși să aflăm cum se reflectă aceste idei și schimbări prin ochii artiștilor, și cum se văd ele de la firul ierbii, din Hundorf.

Suntem deschiși la proiecte care se inspiră din realitățile locale și care chestionează rolul muncii în viața satului contemporan. Cum se transformă satele pe măsură ce universul muncii evoluează? Cum se raportează comunitățile rurale la schimbările economice și tehnologice? Suntem curioși să descoperim idei legate de muncă care să conecteze lumea mică din Hundorf cu lumea largă, internațională.

Ce presupune rezidența?

– O rezidență de 4 săptămâni în satul Hundorf (Viișoara, jud. Mureș) în perioada iunie-august.
– Organizarea și curatorierea unei expoziții de grup la Târgu Mureș cu proiectele realizate în timpul rezidenței. Expoziția este inclusă în programul NAG / Noaptea Albă a Galeriilor.
– Prezentarea proiectelor online pe website-ul asociației: www.acasalahundorf.ro

Dacă ai o relație complexă (un situationship) cu lumea virtuală (don’t we all?), dacă te interesează noile media și lucrul cu alți studenți la facultățile de artă, hai în Performing the digital. in progress!

Ce se va-ntâmpla e că vei avea parte de-o săptămână de laborator (13-17 aprilie la Centrul Naţional al Dansului Bucureşti, 10:00-16:00) pe tema tehnologiei & impactului ei asupra corpului nostru, a felului în care comunicăm și, overall, a vieții de fiecare zi. În cercetarea asta, tu și ceilalți tineri artiști veți fi mentorați de:

• Andreea Novac (coregrafie)
• Vlaicu Golcea (muzică și sunet)
• Sabina Suru (arte vizuale)
• Cristian Iordache (tehnologie)

Mentorii o să vă ghideze în realizarea unei lucrări cu caracter video interdisciplinar, deci veți colabora unii cu alții & vă veți folosi de muzică, dans, imagine, sunet, noile media etc.

După o lună de producție efectivă (oferim un buget pentru asta, dar și un onorariu pentru fiecare din voi), lucrările se vor prezenta la (20-27 mai), într-o expoziție colectivă. Curator e Andrei Tudose.

Festivalul Internațional de Film Transilvania (13 – 22 iunie 2025) deschide perioada de înscrieri pentru ediția de anul acesta a Transilvania Pitch Stop (TPS), cea mai amplă platformă dedicată industriei de film la TIFF. Cineaștii din Ucraina, România, Ungaria, Bulgaria, Serbia, Moldova, Grecia, Turcia și Georgia își pot înscrie proiectele la cea de-a douăsprezecea ediție a programului internațional de co-producții. 

Aplicațiile pot fi depuse online până pe 22 aprilie 2025, prin intermediul platformei eventival.eu.

În cadrul programului TPS, juriul va selecta până la 10 proiecte în dezvoltare, aparținând unor cineaști aflați la debut sau la al doilea lungmetraj. Programul va include prezentarea proiectelor în fața potențialilor parteneri și finanțatori (producători, distribuitori, agenți de vânzări, reprezentanți ai fondurilor de film etc.), întâlniri individuale, discuții aplicate pe proiecte, dar și premii în bani și servicii de producție, oferită de un juriu dedicat. 

Proiectele se pot afla în diferite stadii de dezvoltare, dar un prim draft de scenariu trebuie să fie disponibil în caz de selecție. Pentru a fi eligibil, fiecare proiect trebuie conceput, încă de la început, ca o coproducție europeană. Totodată, cel puțin 20% din bugetul filmului trebuie să fie asigurat deja. Programul se va desfășura în limba engleză.

For University students and recent graduates who demonstrate passion, initiative and aptitude for impact-driven documentary storytelling. This $2000 USD scholarship can be used to help fund participation in any Actuality Abroad Documentary Outreach experience.

The Documentary Outreach is a month-long travel course where you produce short documentary films about global changemakers. Travel the world and learn documentary storytelling alongside other impact-driven filmmakers. Benefit from practical experience collaborating with local experts, leaders and changemakers to help share their remarkable stories.

Interaction: Short Docs Festival is an international festival dedicated to short creative documentaries that push boundaries in documentary creation, with their uniqueness and cinematic innovation. The festival aims to screen and encourage high-quality documentaries critically rethinking the world.

The next edition of the festival will take place between the 19th and 25th of August 2025 in Požega, Serbia.

Awards and Prizes

The festival hands out several awards to the films from the competition programme.

Best Film Award – This award is given to the best film from the competition programme, and awarded by a three-member international jury. The award will be given to the film’s director(s) and, apart from the statute, includes a cash award sponsored by a festival partner.

Green Doc Award – The international jury will also award the Green Doc Award for the best film that deals with environmental issues and sustainability. The award includes a statue.

Special Mention – The Jury, at its discretion, also has the option of handing out Special Mention to only one film.

Youth Jury Award – A youth jury, consisting of Interaction: Teen Doc Workshop participants, will decide on the winner of this award. The award will be given to the film’s director, and it includes a cash award.

Audience Award – The audience rates all the films from the competition programme and the highest-rated one will receive the Audience Award.

We are accepting applications only for the competition programme. The Artistic Director of the festival, supported by programme advisors, will make the final decision on which films will be selected for the 2025 competition programme.

SUBMISSIONS

Before submitting a film, please read the Rules and Regulations.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Submissions are open to short creative documentaries, up to 40 minutes in duration, completed after 1 January 2024
• The festival does not require premiere status, but advantage will be given to the films that haven’t had a Serbian premiere
• Films that have been submitted for consideration in previous years are not eligible, even if the film has changed significantly since its previous submission.
• Only fully completed films will be considered
• Films promoting racism, any form of intolerance, or pornography, shall not be taken into consideration.

The deadline for submitting to the festival is 1 May 2025

How to Submit
Films can be submitted exclusively through FilmFreeway. Submissions or links sent to the festival via email will not be accepted.

Selection Screener
To complete the submission, the festival requires a selection screener of the film.

The selection screener should be:

– Uploaded to a secured streaming platform (Vimeo or similar)

– Private and downloadable

– Available at least until the end of July 2025, but preferably until the beginning of the festival

The URL and password should be submitted through the online entry form. All selection screeners should be in the original language with English subtitles.

FORT/DA de Réka Kovács!

Căutăm actori 25-35 de ani, cu disponibilitate în perioada martie-mai.

Actorii selectați vor fi anunțați prin e-mail și programați pentru casting pe 25, 26 sau 27 februarie 2025.

FORT/DA este debutul în dramaturgie și regie al actriței Réka Kovács, un text născut în cadrul workshop-ului lui Mimi Brănescu, care aduce în scenă o lume plină de autenticitate, familiară și captivantă pentru tânăra dramaturgă.

Proiect cinematografic internațional unic: “ÎNTRE GRANIȚE” („GROUNDED”), cu actori renumiți precum Claudia Gerini (Patimile lui Hristos, John Whick: Chapter 2), Phil Burgers și Isabela Neamțu!

Filmul în regia talentatei Ligia Ciornei (regizoarea filmului “Clouds of Chernobyl”), este inspirat de evenimente reale și spune povestea puternică a trei femei din Italia, România și Ucraina, unite de nevoia de a supraviețui în mijlocul brutalității războiului. Protagonista Francesca (Claudia Gerini), o femeie de afaceri italiană, pornește într-o călătorie în Ucraina pentru a-și salva soțul, Igor și copilul nenăscut, purtat de o mamă surogat ucraineană, Ganna.

HAI LA CASTING! Filmările încep în luna martie 2025 și se vor desfășura în locații din Italia (Roma), România (jud. Suceava) și Ucraina (Cernăuți), atât pentru actori profesioniști, cât și pentru amatori.

Perioadă și durată filmare: De la 1 la 8 zile de filmare, în funcție de rol, în perioada 10 martie – 10 aprilie 2025.

Se caută studenți la actorie pentru mai multe roluri secundare și de figurație specială.

Aplicanții pot fi din București, zona Suceava (inclusiv Iași, Botoșani, Bistrița, Piatra Neamț etc.), din București sau orice altă zonă a țării!

Asociația Culturală Șerban Ionescu susține un stagiu de management cultural
ca parte din organizarea celei de-a V-a ediții a ȘI festival, ediție care va avea loc între
19 și 26 iulie 2025, în satul 2 Mai. Scopul stagiului este de a le oferi participanților
informații practice și teoretice despre derularea unui proiect cultural, ajutând astfel la
formarea de viitori specialiști în domeniul culturii.

Apelul deschis pentru stagiul de management cultural se derulează în perioada
17 februarie – 2 martie 2025 și se adresează persoanelor între 20 și 30 de ani din
România, care e activează deja în domeniul artistic, e intenționează să profeseze în
mediul cultural.

existent pe platforma www.sifestival.ro

Termenul-limită pentru înscrieri este 2 martie 2025, ora 23:59.

CALL FOR FILMS FOR STUDENTS AND RECENT GRADUATES

The CMCA – Centre Méditerranéen de la Communication Audiovisuelle – is
organising the 2nd CourtMed short film competition.
Open to students at universities, film schools and journalism schools, as well as to young
filmmakers who have recently graduated, this competition aims to promote the work and
vision of young mediterranean filmmakers by offering them the opportunity to share their
creations more widely.
The short films submitted must deal with subjects relating to the issues, culture, heritage,
history, societies and lives of women and men in Mediterranean countries. Any audiovisual
work, regardless of genre or technique, lasting no more than 15 minutes and
completed after January 1, 2024 is eligible.
Several prizes are up for grabs in this competition. A public screening of the winning films
will also be organized in Marseille, as part of a short film program.
The call for films is open until 31 March 2025.
